Visiting Orlando in September 2026, The Best Month for Families

Every year, families plan their Orlando trip around summer break, spring break, or Christmas. Those are the three most expensive and most crowded windows on the calendar. Meanwhile there is a four week stretch in September when the parks are close to empty, the hotels are cheap, and almost nobody talks about it.

If you have any flexibility at all with school, September is the month to use it.

What the crowds actually look like

Crowd calendars rate every day of the year from 1 to 10. Most of summer sits at 7 or 8. Spring break weeks hit 9 and 10.

September 6 through 26, 2026 is rated a 2.

That is not a small difference, and it is worth understanding what it means in practice. Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure at Islands of Adventure averages around two hours across the year and regularly sits above 90 minutes by mid-morning. On a quiet September weekday it comes down to roughly 45 to 75 minutes, and under 30 if you are there at park opening or in the last hour before close. Rides you would normally have to choose between, you can simply do all of them.

The reason is straightforward. School is back in session across most of the country, summer travel is over, and the holiday season has not started. Labor Day weekend brings a small bump, then the crowds fall off a cliff and stay down for nearly a month.

What it costs

Hotel rates follow the crowds. September falls in Orlando's low season, so the same room that commands a premium in July or over the holidays drops considerably. Vacation homes and resorts around Kissimmee and the I-Drive corridor are noticeably easier to book and noticeably cheaper.

Airfare tends to follow the same pattern for the same reason. Fewer families flying means less competition for seats.

For a family of four, choosing September over July can be the difference of several hundred dollars on lodging alone, before you factor in that you will need fewer park days to see the same amount.

The weather, honestly

September in Orlando is still hot. Expect highs in the upper 80s to low 90s with real humidity. It is not the pleasant fall weather that arrives in November.

You will also get afternoon thunderstorms. Most days bring one, usually somewhere between two and five in the afternoon, and most of them pass within an hour. Locals do not plan around them, they plan for them. Storms are a good excuse for an indoor show, a table service lunch, or a break back at the hotel.

September is also the statistical peak of hurricane season. Most trips are completely unaffected, but it is worth buying travel insurance and worth knowing that the parks have well practiced procedures if a storm approaches.

The thing nobody warns families about

Here is the part that surprises people, and it is the reason we are writing this post.

Low crowds mean you walk more, not less.

Think about what a busy day actually looks like. You wait 75 minutes for a ride, then 60 for the next one. That is unpleasant, but it is also two hours of standing more or less still, in shade, with your kids contained in one place.

On a crowd level 2 day, most of that disappears. Hagrid's is the outlier, the single longest wait in Orlando, and nothing else behaves like it. Everywhere else you walk from ride to ride and get on within ten or fifteen minutes, then walk to the next one. Families routinely cover eight, nine, ten miles in a September park day because there is nothing slowing them down.

That is fantastic for adults. It is brutal for a four year old.

The families who struggle in September are usually the ones who left the stroller at home thinking the parks would be easy. The park is easy. The mileage is not. A three year old who could handle a busy July day with long shaded queue breaks will hit a wall by two in the afternoon on an empty September day, simply because nothing ever made them stop.

If your child is under six, bring or rent a stroller for September specifically. It is the month you will use it most.

Halloween starts before Halloween

One thing that catches families off guard is that Disney's Halloween season is already running through September.

Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party runs on select nights from August 7 through October 31, 2026. In September the party nights fall on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays, plus one Thursday on September 24. The party runs from 7:00 PM to midnight, and ticket holders can enter Magic Kingdom as early as 4:00 PM.

This matters even if you are not attending. On party nights, Magic Kingdom closes to regular day guests at 6:00 PM. That means shorter hours, but it also means those are excellent days to visit Magic Kingdom during the day, because a lot of people avoid them.

EPCOT's International Food and Wine Festival is also running through September, which brings some evening crowds to EPCOT specifically without affecting the other parks much.

How to plan your September days

• Favor weekdays over weekends. Even in a low crowd month, Saturdays fill up with Florida locals.
• Avoid Labor Day weekend itself if you can. The first week of September carries a holiday bump before the real drop begins.
• Start early. Park opening through about noon is your best window before the afternoon heat and storms arrive.
• Plan a real midday break. With short waits you can afford to leave at one and come back at five, and you will still see everything.
• Pack for rain. A poncho beats an umbrella in a crowd, and a stroller rain cover keeps your bag and your seat dry.

The bottom line

If you can travel in September, do it. Shorter lines, lower prices, and a genuinely different experience of the same parks. You will ride more in three days than most families ride in five during peak season.

Just plan for the walking. That is the trade you are making, and it is an easy one to prepare for.
